History

The Jeffersons business was founded in 1734 and the production of rum on the family estates in Antigua started in 1785 (It is the oldest label in the United Kingdom). The Jeffersons were suppliers of fine wines and spirits to the White Star Line, the owners of the Titanic.

Jefferson's Extra Fine Dark Rum is an impressive marriage of two classic Caribbean rums aged in oak casks to impart a complex balance of flavours.

In character, Jefferson's is a rich, beautifully textured dark rum displaying a fine balance of deep toffee, liquorice and vanilla with a subtle hint of honeycomb and ripe fruit at the finish.

Until recently Jefferson’s rum has been one of the secrets of Cumbria as it was here that the rum first landed in England in 1785 together with exotic cargos from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Since those early days, the reputation for Jefferson’s Extra Fine Dark rum has slowly spread.

Even today the port of Whitehaven welcomes visitors to its ‘Rum Story’ exhibition to celebrate what became known as ‘The Dark Spirit of Whitehaven’

Every bottle is supplied with an individual wooden case reminiscent of the packaging used on the White Star liners. Jefferson’s preserves the rich character of beautifully textured dark Caribbean rum.

Tasting Note: Dave Broom - Rum 4/5

Colour/Nose: Reddish amber. Huge pot-still influence is immediately apparent. Sweet, fat, almost creamy coconut mixed with resinous, deep notes of liquorice, treacle and clove.

Palate: High-cocao-solid chocolate, then chestnut, honey, walnut. Heavy and oily. Water brings out a gentler nature. A gentle giant with a long and warming finish

Conclusion: Old fashioned yet strangely modern, given our rediscovery of great old rums.
