Kaban Tequila

Kaban is a quality, Joven tequila for a new experience for the UK white spirit drinker – a smooth, sipping tequila that has none of the harshness UK tequila drinkers have previously experienced! A premium, 100% Blue Agave tequila, Kaban is produced and bottled in Jalisco, Mexico using traditional clay ovens and the slowest double distillation.

Tequila: Background

Tequila is the spirit of Mexico. It is one of the spirits of the world protected by an ‘Appellation Controlleé’ or Origin Denomination, such as Cognac, Champagne and Port.

Tequila is produced by the fermentation and distillation of the juices obtained from the cooked centre of the blue agave plant, which grows in specific areas of Mexico. It takes about 8-10 years to grow and be ready for tequila production. The local people used to prepare a drink called ‘pulque’ which was the fermented juice of the cooked agave centre. Many years later the Spaniards started to distill this pulque and this is how tequila was born.

Tequila: Production

The agave is harvested by cutting the sharp leaves and leaving only the centre of the plant. It is then cooked by placing it in ovens and cooking it (the distillery cooks by steam in the old-fashioned way, for 24 hours). Milling machines crush the cooked agave and separate the fibre from the juice. The juice is then fermented by placing it in stainless steel vats (the distillery uses natural fermentation and does not use chemical yeasts to accelerate the fermentation). The juice is distilled by using stills that slowly separate the impurities from the juice. A double distillation is carried out in order to achieve the purest product possible.
