Offley

History of Offley

Founded in 1737, Offley Forrester is one of the oldest Port Houses and rose to prominence under the tutelage of Joseph Forrester, a legendary figure in the history of port.

Forrester's life was devoted to improving the quality of port and in recognition of his endeavours the King of Portugal made him Baron Forrester.

Today Offley Forrester produces the brand leading ports in the home of port itself – Portugal!

The jewel in the Offley crown is the Quinta BoaVista (‘Beautiful View Vineyard' suggesting the dramatic views enjoyed by the vineyard over the Douro Valley), once the home of Barron Forrester and it is now one of the most renowned vineyards in the Douro valley. Offley Late Bottled Vintage is traditionally produced with grapes from this area.

Offley Vintage Port 2003

Tasting Notes

Offley Boavista 2003 Vintage Port presents a very deep red colour and very good aromatic concentration and intensity, highlighting ripe red fruits (raspberry, “cassis”, plums) and floral aromas (violets), cocoa and exotic woods. The resin aromas of pine tree, cedar and mint, wild plants and varnish are typical of Upper Corgo region and give it an added complexity. To the mouth, the wine is soft and rich, with a long and lingering finish. The wine shows good structure and concentration, backed by lively, firm tannins, very well balanced. A very elegant wine, with a long and lingering finish.

Winemaking

At arrival to the winemaking centre, the hand-picked grapes are de-stalked, crushed and vinified in stainless steel temperature controlled fermenting vats. The wines are transported to the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia where they will age with great care before bottling. The wine-making methods combine modern technology and age old traditions, preserving the quality and identity of this excellent wine.

Varieties

Offley Boavista 2003 Vintage Port results of a blend of selected native red varieties like Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela grown at Offley’s leading estate Quinta da Boavista in the Upper Corgo region of the Douro.

10 Years Old Porto with box
10 & 20 Years Old Tawny Porto

Offley Tawny 10 Years Old

Tasting Notes

Offley 10 Years Old Tawny is a superior quality Porto, a tawny with an indication of age that combines freshness and maturity in an excellent way. This 10 year-old Tawny is one of the category's most attractive references. It has an intense tawny colour with brick-like tones. Its elegant and complex bouquet is characterised by flavours of ripe fruit, marmalade and dry fruit, with notes of vanilla, raisins and jelly. In the mouth, the balance between the richness of the grapes' natural sugars and its tannins provide the wine with a fine structure and a delicate yet complex finish. The intensity of retro-nasal aromas completes the tasting and gives the wine a final persistence typical of Offley brand's unmistakeable style

Winemaking

The port is produced by the traditional Porto wine method. The hand-picked grapes undergo stalk-removal and crushing before fermentation, under controlled temperature, with skin maceration so as to extract the best components. The addition of wine alcohol at the ideal moment sets the balance between the wine's body and bouquet. This moment is chosen by the winemaker following strict control of fermentation temperatures and densities, the later depending on the vine variety, maturation stage and the final sweetness required

Varieties

Offley 10 Years Old Tawny is a blended wine, made from a selection of quality grapes from the traditional red varieties recommended for Porto wine making, namely Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão
